July 25–28, 2013
(last weekend in July)
We know you have lots of choices on when and where to dance Tango. Here is why we think Tango Element-Baltimore should be one of your must-go destinations in 2012.
Our Cast of Characters
Every year we try to "wow" you with an amazing line up of maestros to provide you with the opportunity to study and learn with the most acclaimed talent available without leaving the US - by carefully selecting teachers that not only represent Tango in its most classic form, but those that provide a window to what is currently developing on the world stage. This year, we are particularly pleased with our diverse and sophisticated group that represents a good balance of tradition and innovation, with extraordinary teaching technique. This is a dream team of Tango masters in their only East coast (and for most, their only US) appearances this year and should not to be missed! Not to mention the highlight of this year's festival, the legendary Alberto Podesta who will perform with the infamous Alex Krebs Tango Quartet (the Quartet alone is another outstanding experience)! Alberto Podesta's participation is a great honor for Tango Element that truly presents a lifetime opportunity to dance to the voice who sang with Di Sarli, Calo, and many others.
And the DJs! These guys are legends and have moved more feet on the dance floor than any others here and abroad, capturing the mood and keeping the floor moving into the wee hours of the morning. Many of those spinning at Tango Element have the credentials of being requested DJs at milongas in Buenos Aires when they visit. They possess a depth of knowledge in the heritage of the music as well as the ability to connect it musically in a way that inspires dancers for hours on end. Need we say they capture the soul of the Tango?
Venue & Food
Baltimore is known as "charm city". This distinctive, colorful city is so rich in history that it's amazing that it hasn't been deemed one of America's greatest historical destinations. It can boast to having one of the most remarkable urban transformations in history, yet it continues to welcome and amaze visitors with "down to earth, small town" spirit and hospitality. With an eclectic mix of culture that captures the barrio feel with neighborhoods such as Little Italy, Greektown, and Little Havana, where you can get authentic cuisine, Baltimore also has amazing museums and modern attractions for a great city vibe in places such as the Inner Harbor and Fells Point.
Tango Element is taking place in one fantastic venue, centrally located to all the major attractions, with all classes and milongas under one roof. You get choose: Just chill out and relax - no rushing and running around town for your classes and milongas - or take advantage of the convenient location and take a little time to explore the city!
The Tremont Grand Hotel is a 20 minute cab ride from the BWI airport; a shorter jaunt from the Amtrak station. You can use Metro or Light Rail to a station within walking distance to the hotel from either. The hotel has undergone a recent renovation and we've negotiated an excellent $109/night group rate for you. All rooms are extremely spacious, equipped with a kitchenette, and include a free Internet connection. The supreme downtown location in the heart of the city places you only five blocks away from the beautiful, historic Inner Harbor and near other tourist attractions. There is an array of restaurants for all tastes surrounding the hotel, and a Super Fresh grocery store across the street (so you could put your kitchenettes to use!). The City offers a free bus service all day and into late evening that travels to import areas, with stops right outside the hotel - so no need for car, either.
John and Cara Macdonald's Tango Element 2011 Improvised Video Blog:
Not only is the Tremont in a great location, it's not called The Grand for nothing. The developers and architects responsible for building the hotel realized what a treasure the Masonic Temple site was and built the hotel around the building, preserving the grandeur and craftsmanship of the ballrooms we are fortunate to occupy. They are truly historic, breath taking, and add so much to the ambiance of the milongas!
Of course, all of you are the ones who make this festival outstanding! We love the range of levels from those just beginning to savor the Tango to the most popular teachers in the country (actually, many attendees point out the overall high level of dancing in classes and milongas). Thanks to YOU for helping to make this wonderful learning environment where we all come together to discover, create and enjoy!!!
A little extra
Finally, TE will be offering a select number of quality vendors of Tango accessories so that you can buy the most coveted and searched after tango shoe brands, such as CommeilFaut, DNI Tango, 2x4 (guys, don't miss those!) and more. There will also be exquisite clothing made specifically for tango and other fine goods. Additionally, a reflexologist will be on site over the weekend to help soothe those aching body parts through this ancient practice of foot massage. Just ask anyone who received therapy last year and they'll tell you what a refreshing, rewarding experience (and Godsend) it is to have these services available during the festival.
WE HOPE YOU ARE CONVINCED BY NOW! TRUST US, WE ARE TAKING GOOD CARE OF OUR ATTENDEES AND MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE TIME OF THEIR LIFE IN BALTIMORE
